Nature, in contrast, is strong and guides all things. What we consider the most natural inclinations are the strongest: our desires to eat, drink, and have sex. For de Sade, sex is the most important and plays the largest role in his philosophy. Humans are completely subordinated to Nature in a way that they will never be subordinated to God as argued above. Because humans are of Nature, we cannot do anything that would break her natural laws. From here, de Sade extrapolates that it is Nature’s laws we should worship, and obey only the impulses she gives to us. This is how the world is ordered and to disobey Nature’s calling would be to disrupt the order of the things and result in Nature rectifying the situation, and “punish[ing] us with a thousand miseries”
